Some of the strangest booths at the Global Pet Expo earlier this year were in the food section.

Tyson set up a deli case with meatballs, bacon strips and other dog treats, which employees wrapped in butcher paper for fairgoers.

A few meters away, a company called Country Kitchen operated a Serrano ham carving station (the meat was for humans, they sold the bones for dogs).

In another aisle, Boss Dog displayed cartons of frozen yogurt for dogs, in flavors like slow-cooked pumpkin and peanut butter and banana.

And then there was Jiminy’s, a new dog food made from crickets. Chief Executive Ann Carlson, a former fan of Smucker’s pet food division, said insect-based diets are more environmentally friendly and humane than their cow and chicken counterparts.

“Our insects live long, happy lives” in “special cricket condos,” says Jiminy’s in its press kit. At harvest time, the thermostat is turned down until the bugs enter a “hibernation state” and die before being roasted and ground into powder.

Jiminy also debuted the canine grub made from grubs. Cooking made with other exotic ingredients is on the drawing board, said Carlson, who has tested 15 types of insects and jokingly calls crickets “a gateway bug.” Next, she hopes to develop a line of cat food.

A different food innovation has come from Nestlé Purina, which says its upcoming Pro Design Liveclear formula reduces cat hair allergens by 47%. The secret ingredient, which took more than a decade of research, is a protein derived from eggs.

Most new products echo human food trends. Two companies — Merrick and Cloud Star — debuted Texas barbecue-flavored burgers for carpet (as well as Kansas City and Memphis barbecue recipes). “Merrick was probably looking at the same research we saw,” said Ann Hudson of Cloud Star, which also makes dog ice cream and sweet potato chips.

Other crowd-inspired edibles included pet granola, trail mix, and “French artisanal macarons” packaged in gift boxes like Zen’s candies.

The humanization of pet rations dates back to at least 1961, when General Foods introduced individually packaged Gaines hamburgers for dogs. Similar anthropomorphized food fads followed: from Maurice the Cat, the feline with 9 lives, to Snousages in a Blanket. But they pale in comparison to today’s fare.

The rise of ultra gourmet diets began several years ago. Now the momentum is so strong that Petco has begun opening in-store kitchens where “trained chefs cook fresh, human-grade food” for cats and dogs, according to a news release.

David Lummis, pet market analyst at Packaged Facts, a consumer research firm, said kibble and canned food “will soon be seen as increasingly outdated.”

Responding to this trend, some expo vendors have tried to project an aura of luxury. Chicken Soup for the Soul’s pet food stand featured a modern hearth with fake flames, cozy chairs, a coffee table lined with books and photos on the mantle. The Fromm Gallery of Fine Foods displayed oil paintings of a “Napoleon” cat, a musical dog sporting athletic shoes, a Julie Andrew feline with a “Sound of Music” motif, cowboy animals and other images.

Meanwhile, England-based Canagan has promoted dog food menus inspired by “the food of their ancestors”. Judging by the ingredient lists in the canon, prehistoric canines apparently feasted on delicacies such as Scottish salmon, seaweed, tapioca, mint, and glucosamine.

April 9, 2020 11:41 am: A caption with an earlier version of this article said the pet treats in a display case came from Blue Buffalo. They are sold by Tyson. The quest for healthier pet foods has taken some interesting turns with the introduction of raw foods, grain-free diets, and diets made with all kinds of unusual ingredients, including sweet potato, rosemary, blueberries, pea protein, and more. We already know that some of these diets produce some cases of animal and human disease. The most obvious are bacterial infections in pets who eat and in owners who handle some raw diets. New to the mix are reports that some diets made with new ingredients may be linked to heart disease in dogs. (See “Unusual pet diets may be linked to heart disease in dogs” here and an updated information post here.)

Some of these trends are trickling down to exotic pets, starting with “grain-free” diets for ferrets and more. How are pet owners and vets supposed to know which diets are healthy and which can cause harm over time?

This becomes difficult when our owners ask for advice on diets they have found on the Internet or are recommended by breeders – it is impossible for anyone to fully understand everything there is to know about a diet simply by reading the ingredients label. True analysis requires a lot more information than the label and a PhD in nutrition.

Also, while new diets developed from new ingredients appear on paper to meet nutritional requirements, they may perform differently when the pet actually eats them. To complicate matters, many diet-related problems do not appear for months or even years. (This is why major dog/feline pet food manufacturers test their products on multiple generations of dogs and cats over many years).

Our general recommendations are to stick with manufacturers with years of experience and a track record of healthy pets consuming the diet; Our next recommendation for less common pets is to follow the recommendations of Dr. Zoo Nutritionists.

This post was written for dog and cat owners, but we think it’s great advice for any pet owner.

Exotic pets are basically defined as anything other than a cat, dog or farm animal. Nutrition is species specific and the differences can be quite striking.
