Tonquin Inn Surrounded by the majesty of the mountains, Tonquin Inn offers ideal accommodation for adventure seekers. Winter adventurers may find it difficult to take their dogs on mountain treks, but Nipika Eco Resort welcomes canine visitors with open arms. Hands – No leashes required.

For most active dog owners, a fantastic winter getaway is one that includes both their pups’ happiness and their own. Imagine a world where leashes are rare and dogs are allowed to roam anywhere and everywhere; A place with endless groomed trails where you can Nordic ski or fat bike with your kids by your side. You will imagine Nipika Mountain Resort.

Nipika, located 30 kilometers east of Radium Hot Springs, is dog-friendly, say – but not too far. In 1979, when owners Lyle and Diane Wilson first purchased the property where Nipika now stands, they had a German Shepherd named Ochuk. Naturally, Ochuk was Layleen’s best friend and ran the place and is still there in spirit. When the Wilsons built their first cabin on the land in 1996-1997, they had two cubs, Yoshi and Murphy—the latter a legend for catching Frisbees while chasing elk and horses.

While the resort has certainly embraced fat biking in recent years, with nearly 30 fat bike trails on its grounds, Nordic skiing has always been the heart and soul of Nipika’s winter programming. Lyle coached Canada’s national cross-country ski team for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and 1992 Albertville, and the resort hosts an annual Rocky Mountain Ski Week in January. Open to all levels of Nordic skiers, Ski Week is a clinic offering instruction and training in classic and skate styles, theory sessions and personal technical video analysis. (Ski Week registrations also include lodging, food and social activities.) Lyle has always had dogs, always skied with dogs, and never thought about whether there would be dogs around the resort he and his family built. Dogs are an integral part of Nipika’s story, as are the solar panels that power this eco-friendly operation.

It doesn’t matter if the Wilsons set out to open one of the most dog-friendly resorts on earth, the fact is they did. Most Nipika employees have dogs and are allowed to bring their dogs to work. The resort is accessed by a logging road with significant weekday truck traffic, but cabin facilities are far north of the trail system and 50 km outside the Kootei National Park boundary. way.

The nine guest cabins are arranged in a spacious semi-circle, encouraging supervised children to play in the heart of the resort. This helps ease the fears of anxious owners who may be new to leashing their dogs in such a setting, especially given how strict the laws and regulations are regarding leashes in national and provincial parks. Some parks in British Columbia are labeled “dog-friendly” with off-leash and swimming areas – but only in certain areas. There is no “dog department” in Nipika as they are allowed everywhere and all the way (the only place they are not allowed is on the furniture). There is no limit on the number of dogs – in the past they have accepted up to 30 canine guests. The resort reserves one dog-free cabin to accommodate guests with allergies, although it will be rented to guests with a dog if needed, followed by a deep clean.

Each guest cabin at Nipika is made of wood from the property and is equipped with a wood-burning stove, kitchen facilities (stoves and refrigerators, but no microwaves, toasters or dishwashers) and comfortable, sturdy furniture. Most cabins sleep between six and eight. The largest, Rocky Mountain Cabin, can accommodate up to 13 guests, while the smallest, Bill Yearling Cabin, can accommodate four guests.

On a typical winter day in Nipiqua, you can wake up, put on your snowshoes and take your dogs for a morning walk. (The resort requires owners of aggressive and game-chasing dogs to be on a leash, otherwise, if you prefer, go off-leash.) Conversely, you can fire up the stove, make some coffee, and feed the pups (and you). Equipped for nordic skiing or fatbike. Then, straight from the cabin, you can hit the trails. If you’re worried about the cold, there are dog-friendly warming huts along the trails.

For the most part, it is a place where dogs are welcome as guests and can run and play freely in a natural environment with their owners. Unless you’re on a private estate, this is a rare treat for dog owners and their canine companions. A trip to Nipika isn’t just for you, it’s for your best friend too.

There are dog-friendly hotels everywhere you go, although guests are asked not to leave dogs unattended or to crate them if they are left unattended. Although it can be done in a very short amount of time, it is definitely not a humane option if you plan to spend a whole day on the slopes. Some skiers/dog owners hire housekeeping staff (and throw them some money) to keep the dogs quiet if they bark or get excited. But this is not exactly an exceptional practice and may not be possible even in large residences with large housekeeping staff.
